Customized classic cars go green

Ford worked in partnership with Detroit Street Rods and Experi-metal Inc. to insert one of Ford's new 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbocharged V-6 engines, the powerplant used in the 2010 Ford Taurus SHO, into one of the all-steel, '34 Ford three-window coupes produced by Experi-metal in Sterling Heights.

Technosports Inc. of Livonia also played a major role, repackaging the turbochargers and doing the exhaust development and other plumbing so the engine, used by Ford in front-wheel-drive vehicles, could send its power -- 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque -- through a Tremac TKO five-speed manual gearbox and 9-inch Ford differential to the hot rod's rear wheels.

Several Detroit area automotive specialty shops were involved, including Kustom Creations Inc. of Sterling Heights, which did the Planet Color paint, and Shelby Trim, also of Sterling Heights, which did the Ivory leather interior with Tomato red piping.

GM's showcase for an emission-legal high-performance classic is called the E-Rod, and was created using the 1955 Chevrolet two-door sedan that GM Performance Parts uses to develop classic car components.
