'A Single Man' is singularly superb, thanks to Firth, visuals

Designer Tom Ford 's directorial debut is an aesthetic wonder. Ford pays precise attention to detail and authenticity in the production design, furnishings, clothing, cars and hairstyles of 1962, when the story is set.

Though the deliberate pace can feel slow to glacial at times, the visuals are gorgeous, and the melancholy mood is exquisitely evoked.

A Single Man hinges on Firth's nuanced and heartfelt performance as George Falconer, a British professor at a Los Angeles college grappling with the sudden death of his longtime partner, Jim ( Matthew Goode ). They had lived together in deep contentment for 16 years, and Falconer is devastated when he learns of Jim's car accident, in which he's instantly killed, along with one their pet terriers.

Trapped in his grief and solitude, George is unmoored. "For the first time in my life, I can't see the future," he says. His days pass in a haze, and we feel his sadness. Wistfully, he makes attempts to connect with those around him — a kindness to his housekeeper, a courtly gesture to an assistant at school and an earnest philosophical lecture aimed at broadening the perspectives of his students. Still, he's mired in disillusionment and mourning.
