New school posse rides hard

Once the board reconvened, the new majority figuratively wiped the crumbs from their chins and marched Hill to the chopping block. His term was supposed to run until June. But why delay the inevitable?

Ron Margiotta, champion of the southwest Wake suburbanites nursing a host of grievances with the school system, was the lone conservative holdover on the board. There was talk during the recent campaign - how credible, anyone's guess - that he had helped vet candidates who would qualify for backing from groups seeking to overturn the system's student assignment policy. That policy, with its emphasis on diversity, was hated with a purple passion. Too much moving around and, probably for some, too much mixing.

Had Margiotta been a liaison with local Republicans, who ended up endorsing the insurgent slate? It would scarcely come as a shock.

When the election dust settled, and Margiotta was joined by soul mates Debra Goldman, Chris Malone, Deborah Prickett and John Tedesco, he suddenly went from being the nine-person board's right-wing outrider to senior member of its controlling bloc. Now that's Chairman Margiotta to you, bub.
