Police looking for suspects who stole safe from East Memphis Chick-fil-A

The owner of a chicken franchise thinks at least three thieves honed their skills at another restaurant before they hatched a plan to haul away his safe.

The men broke into the Chick-fil-A, 4916 Poplar, early Sunday, using crowbars to pry the safe loose from its bolts, then loading it onto a two-wheel dolly to lug it from the store.

They left in a green Ford Explorer.

The crime closely matches an incident at the Chick-fil-A at 1980 Union Oct. 26. In that burglary, the suspects arrived in an older-model pickup; a car was also seen nearby.

Security video shows several burglars hauling the safe through the window and loading it onto the truck.

The men got $5,300 in the Union burglary, according to a police report.

"It was the same number of guys in both situations, the same M.O, the same timing," said Scott Malone, who owns the Poplar restaurant, but not the Union location. "We certainly believe they were related."

His safe weighs "upwards of 500 pounds," he said.
