Redesigned Sienna goes for efficiency

The Toyota Sienna, arguably the best import minivan, gets even better for 2011 when the third generation comes to market in February.

Toyota unveiled the redesigned Sienna during the recent media days at the Los Angeles auto show.

Although the new model still looks substantially the same as the 2010 version, Toyota says the vehicle is completely new inside and out.

It will come in seven- or eight-passenger configurations and will be available with either a 187-horsepower, 2.7-liter inline four-cylinder engine or a 3.5-liter, 266-horsepower V-6. Both engines will be connected to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The 3.5-liter has EPA fuel-economy ratings of 18 mpg city/24 highway (16/22 with all-wheel drive), while the four-cylinder is rated at 19 city/26 highway (front-wheel drive only; all-wheel drive is not offered with the four-cylinder engine).

This will be the first four-cylinder engine for the Sienna, and the first four in a Toyota minivan since the midengine Previa was replaced by the Sienna in 1998. The Previa and its predecessor, the original Toyota Minivan introduced for 1985, came only with four-cylinder engines.
